If you haven’t started this novella triple threat yet, visit the Chesspocalypse page for links to buy all three. OR, give me another month or two and I’ll have the collection released as a single omnibus. All together, the Brainstorm Trilogy is nearly 140,000 words long—the length of a very long novel. At $2.99 a pop (for the e-book), you’re getting a brand new, super-sized Jack Sigler thriller for under $10 (they’re normally $12.99 — Threshold was $15). For a fair comparison, the print books are $9.99 each for a total of $30, just $2 more than the Threshold cover price, but 30,000 words longer. Here’s the story summary:

Twice before, Jack Sigler—Callsign: King—has stopped the mysterious ‘Brainstorm’ from destroying all life on earth. Twice before, he’s survived Brainstorm’s assassins. So when the mastermind behind Brainstorm surfaces in Paris, King goes on the offensive.

As the final showdown unfolds in the legendary City of Lights, the villain’s scheme to plunge the world into literal darkness is revealed. But even Brainstorm isn’t ready for the destructive force that has been unleashed…an entity of darkness imprisoned for more than a thousand years, set free now to devour…everything.

The blackout has begun… When the sun rises, the world will end.

I honestly can’t remember the exact number off the top of my head. I think part of my brain is trying to forget the mad rush that was 2011. Out of those books, five were backlist (already written), seven were co-authored (I didn’t do all the work). But five of them were written in 2011. The average author writes one, maybe two novels in a year. When readers and other authors hear that I write more than double that amount, the next thing out of their mouth is, “How do you write so many books?”

Well, today, I’m revealing my secret.

There are some obvious steps that come before the real meat of what I have to say. First, you need a good subject matter. Something that really holds your interest and gets you excited. If you’re bored, at all, with what you’re writing about, it’s going to slow you down. Similarly, you need great characters. When you sit down to write, it should feel like sitting down with friends. Even your antagonist can be someone you look forward to hanging out with for a day.

Last, but not least, you need time. I write for a living, so I have time. BUT I only work Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. Those eight daily hours include at least an hour of replying to e-mails, 45 minutes for lunch and The Daily Show, an hour (sometimes more) of marketing and typically another random chunk of time spent chatting with my three homeschooled kids. Actual time spent writing is 4 – 5 hours tops. That’s just 20 – 25 hours a week. In the past five days, working those hours, I wrote 20,000 words.

If you have children and a job, I sympathize with you. Finding 4 hours a day will be a challenge, but if you cut out a TV show or two, 2000 words a day (still more than many professional authors) is possible. And before you complain, I know people who do this. If you’re single, or have no kids, you have no excuse. You think you’re busy…but you’re not. Ask anyone with children.
So, once you’ve got the great idea, characters you love, and you have dedicated a chunk of daily time, you’re ready for the big secret.

Ready?

Here it is.

Daydream.

That’s it. Sounds simple and a little fruity, but it’s actually quite difficult. Still a little fruity, though. I’m not talking about a random thought involving your story. I’m talking about pushing everything out of your mind—bills, your jackass boss, the guy who cut you off on the road, screaming children, the last episode of Fringe, that girl (or guy) at work who’s been making eyes at you—EVERYTHING. If your head isn’t clear, you won’t be able to daydream on the level I’m talking about.

Close your eyes, relax, ignore your crazy life and start thinking about your story. Start small. Some detail about a scene you plan to write the following day. Maybe a piece of dialogue. Visualize the scene. Run through it. Then, repeat. Run through the scene again. Each pass brings out more details. Here’s where the magic happens. Without you fully realizing anything has changed, the scene will be playing out without your conscious mind driving it. Characters will say things you hadn’t planned on. Plots will develop in unexpected ways. The world you’ve created will come to life. This is daydreaming. Everything before is just thinking. If you do it enough, you’ll remember the scene like you were there and the writing will flow faster than you could ever imagine.

This is where my speed comes from. I don’t have to think about what I’m going to write. It’s already in my head, ready to be typed into the real world. This is how I write about 1000 words an hour, sometimes more. At this speed, writing 20 – 25 hours a week, if I didn’t take time to work on other projects between books, I could write 10 – 12 books a year. Yikes. If you only have 10 hours a week to write, but can use daydreaming to speed up the process, you could write 4 – 6 novels in a year!

Sounds great, you say, but time is short! When am I going to find time to daydream?

I’ll start with the few prime times to daydream. These are probably the times you spend dwelling on your day, problems, etc, so it’s going to take some practice to ignore those things.

1. In the shower. Sounds hokey, but try it. Wash as fast as you can. Then stand under the hot stream of water, close your eyes, direct your mind to your story and let your mind drift. Some of my best ideas come while I’m in the shower.

2. While falling asleep. As your mind gets closer to sleep, your imagination is free to wander. And if you fall asleep while daydreaming a scene, there are two side benefits. The first is that people sometimes dream about the last thing they think about before falling asleep. Actual dreams can be the ultimate daydream, though they can be a little trippy, too. But I’ve based several books on actual dreams, including one of my bestselling books, TORMENT. The other benefit is that your book, and that scene, will probably be the first thing you think about upon waking, which brings us to…

3. When you wake up. I don’t know many people who launch out of bed upon waking, or when the alarm goes off—if you’ve set your alarm for the last possible moment, set it ten minutes earlier. If you can lie in bed for 10 – 30 minutes after waking, your mind is in the perfect near-dream state to daydream effortlessly. You have yet to fill your mind with fresh distractions.

4. When you’re sick. Sounds horrible, right? But when you’re sick and just laying around, your mind is in a sleepy state that’s similar to just waking up. A few weeks ago, I got sick. Really sick. Laid down in bed and let my mind wander on a three word story idea that my son gave to me. By the time I dragged myself out of bed an hour later, I had the entire story worked out, a title, a book cover idea and several key scenes. The next day I wrote up a summary, created a book cover and sent the idea to my agent (before writing 4000 words). His response to the hour long daydream session was, “I think this is better than 70% of what publishers put out,” and a strong encouragement for me to write the book.

Now that we’ve covered the easy opportunities for daydreaming, let’s move to the less obvious. When you become a practiced daydreamer, you’ll develop the ability to let your mind go and drop into a scene like you’re watching a movie. It’s as easy as…watching a movie. I’m able to stare off into space, with my eyes open, jump into a scene and watch it play out. This is often how I write. I’m not even seeing the screen, or the words I’m typing. I’m simply writing what I’m seeing and experiencing. I wince at the horrible things, laugh at the funny, cry at the sad and jump at the surprises that even I sometimes don’t see coming. ANTARKTOS RISING fans will remember Jacobson’s fate. That wasn’t planned. I had no idea it was coming until it happened.

A word of warning. When you become really good at dropping yourself into a daydream, it can happen without you realizing it. I’ve drifted during conversations, while trying to read or while watching a movie. But the worst is when you’re driving. I’ve gotten good at not daydreaming while driving, but long trips and lots of monotonous highway can be dangerous. I’ve narrowly avoided a few accidents that would have been caused because I was in Antarctica at the time. So don’t daydream and drive.

On the bright side, daydreaming works for cover design, video trailer creation, speeches and anything else you need to create. But don’t take my word for it, here’s a NY Times article on the benefits of daydreaming. This video from the New Yorker Festival is also interesting.

There you have it. That’s my secret. In some ways I’m a professional daydreamer. And if you want to write—or write more, next time you’re sneaking some Angry Birds at work, try daydreaming instead. When you get home, take a shower and daydream some more. If you have to put your little one to sleep, daydream while you’re lying next to him or her. When you sit down to write at 9pm, the 500 words you normally struggle with could be 2000. At the beginning of March, I was given 40 days to write an 82,000 word novel. I did it in 25. You can, too.

Between my hardcovers released by Thomas Dunne, the continuing Antarktos Saga, the Jeremy Bishop books and the ever expanding Jack Sigler/Chess Team series, I have promised fans and readers a large number of books to be released on a yearly basis. 2012 is no exception as I prepare to release CALLSIGN: KING – BLACKOUT, SECONDWORLD, THE LAST HUNTER – LAMENT, THE RAVEN, RAGNAROK and THE LAST HUNTER – ONSLAUGHT, in that order.

It’s a crazy schedule, but I don’t like keeping my fans waiting, especially for series books like THE LAST HUNTER. When there isn’t a large publisher involved, laying out a book-a-year schedule, why wait? After all, it’s YOU who spends your hard-earned money on my books. It’s YOU who pays my bills. It’s YOU who spreads the word about my books. Without YOU, my reader, I would be unemployed.

Of course, maybe I’m just saying this to make readers like me more. Could be a subtle manipulation designed to have readers buy more books and introduce my novels to friends. After all, there’s no tangible proof that I am truly committed to my readers.

Well, that’s not entirely true. Granted, you’ll have to take my word on this, but if I were going to conjure up something for personal gain, this wouldn’t be it. Plus, I’m an honest guy. Ask anyone who knows me (except for my brothers—they have memories of Monopoly insider trading and real estate scams).

So, what is this proof of my commitment to you? Twice in the past two years I have been offered a large sum of money—double any advance I have ever received—to ghost write a book for someone far more famous than me. I can’t give details for confidentiality reasons, but the projects were cool and the money really good. My answer to both offers was easy to make: NO.

Err, what? No? Why would I turn down easy money?

Here’s the deal: both projects would have also required me to delay the release of my books. Most of my books are self-published. Rearranging the schedule is a simple thing. And money certainly wasn’t an issue. So what was the deciding factor? YOU. The reader. Accepting the latest offer would have pushed THE LAST HUNTER – LAMENT to the end of the year. THE RAVEN and THE LAST HUNTER – ONSLAUGHT would have been delayed until sometime in 2013! Had I also accepted the first ghost writing offer, these books wouldn’t be out until 2014! If you’re a fan, I think you’ll agree with me when I thrust an index finger skyward and declare, “Unacceptable!” My long term commitment is to YOU, and a quick payday isn’t enough to change that. We’re in this together, for the long haul, and I thought you might like to know that the new, attractive sugar-mama failed to woo me. Twice.

So here’s my belated Valentine’s Day message to my readers:

We hang out at the water cooler to swap equal parts advice and publishing horror stories. We even report to and use sites like Predators and Editors to make sure we’re not signing with a scummy publisher. Because that’s what we fear most, even more than Stephen King ripping us off.

Bad publishers can kill careers, or at least delay them. But what makes a publisher bad? Off the top of my head:

1. Non-payment, whether it be advance or royalty.
2. No royalty reports (connected to the number 1, but also includes not knowing the total number of books actually sold by the publisher).
3. Broken promises, which could include the promise of marketing, a print run, PR, etc.
4. Half-assed effort, which includes poor cover design or interior design, lack of editing and sloppy e-formatting.

These things are the basic standards most authors expect good publishers to meet. And what they really boil down to is honesty. We want publishers to do what they’ve said they’ll do. If they don’t, we’ll make sure a well-written tirade finds its way onto every message board and group we can think of.

But here’s the thing. In the last few years, a good number of us have taken to self-publishing our books. The popularity of e-books and the growing POD market has made releasing a book easier than ever. What this means is:

The author is now the publisher.

Whoohoo! No more scummy, untrustworthy publishers! Money will be paid out on time! Honesty will abound! How could it not? Author and publisher merged into one entity means there’s no one to get stiffed.

Insert sound of screeching tires…or a scratching record (if you know what that is). I wish the statement above was true. It SHOULD be true. After all, who knows the value of honest business better than authors, who obsess about it? Unfortunately, that’s not the way it’s working out. Some of the new breed of author/publishers are resorting to the same backhanded tactics of bad large publishers. Sure, the writer is getting paid like never before, but editors, artists, designers and other folks that self-publishers are “hiring” are discovering that some authors have learned the ways of the publishing dark side a little too well, specifically in the areas of non-payment and false promises.

I’m a self-published author. I’m also published by Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press. I’ve been the owner of a small press. I’ve worked as an art director. I’ve also done freelance book-cover design, interior design and Web design. As a result, I have friends in every part of this business, from printers, to artists, to editors and marketing experts. I’m starting to hear horror stories about authors who don’t pay when jobs are completed. Some are even offering royalties in exchange for services, but refuse to release sales figures and never pay out a penny. This pisses me off. The hypocrisy of it is mind-numbing. Maybe we should add a self-publisher section to Predators and Editors so service providers can research authors making promises? While this problem certainly isn’t wide spread yet, I’m willing to bet that list would be steadily growing.

Basically, what I want to say is this: knock it off! If you offer someone royalties, pay them. I know it’s a huge pain in the butt to keep track of sales, do a little math and cut a check every few months, but you’re not an idiot. You knew that going in. If you offered to pay an artist for a cover and they were trusting enough to send you a 300dpi version before you clicked “send money” at Paypal, don’t stiff them. Pay up. Don’t ignore e-mails. Don’t hide sales. Don’t cover your lies with more false promises. DON’T BE A BAD PUBLISHER!

It’s great that you’ve identified your weaknesses and that you’re seeking professional help to compensate. That’s a good thing. It means you’re not being a half-assed self-publisher. But please don’t rip-off the people making you look good. It’s bad for them. It’s bad for you, and it’s bad for the reputation of all self-publishers. If artists, editors and other service providers were as obsessed about being treated as fairly as authors are, I’m sure there would already be lists and message boards populated with authors’ names. Would you be on it? If so, change the way you do business before someone gets around to making that list.

We’re already hard at work banging out the plot, which is one of my most ambitious yet and will feature a nemesis far beyond anything King and crew have faced before. We’ll also learn the answers to many of the questions left open at the end of THRESHOLD.

What this means is: 1) RAGNAROK will be as good as the first three novels, with the same mixture of relentless action, science, mythology, creatures and humor. 2) The book will be delivered in late summer 2012 as promised. 3) I’ll have time to write the four other novels I need to write in 2012, including the last two books in THE LAST HUNTER series. AND 4) I might have time to try something new (like a screenplay, short film or an experimental novella), which will help me maintain a high level of creativity.

I’m very excited to have Kane on board for the book. Not only is he a great writer, but he also knows the series better than anyone. He’s a diehard fan of the first three novels, but he also edited all of the CALLSIGN novellas and co-authored one of them. This combination of talent and series knowledge makes him the perfect person to co-author the next full length book. Because he lives just over the state line means we’ll actually get to work out the final details in person, which should result in a flawless plot (I usually bounce ideas off the wall in my office, which provides little in the way of feedback). To sum all that up: this is going to be fun!

If you have any doubts about this collaboration, check out CALLSIGN: DEEP BLUE. Then check out Kane’s solo book, RESURRECT. Both are awesome.

Holy crap. Not exactly an elegant expression of surprise/relief/excitement, but it pretty well summarizes how I feel as 2011 comes to a close. I wrote four novels (SECONDWORLD, THE SENTINEL, THE LAST HUNTER – PURSUIT and THE LAST HUNTER – ASCENT) which is about three more books than the average author. But I also co-authored and released SEVEN novellas collectively known as the Chesspocalypse. Each book focuses on a single member of Chess Team, a black ops team that deals with terrorists, madmen and monsters—sometimes all three at once. In November, the last three books of the Chesspocalypse arrived and brought the madness to a close. Before you ask, I’m currently planning just one Chesspocalypse book for 2012; CALLSIGN: KING – Book 3 – BLACKOUT, co-authored once again by Sean Ellis. That said, I’m also planning on releasing the fourth full length Chess Team novel, RAGNAROK in late summer, 2012. So, let’s get to the books!

CALLSIGN: BISHOP

An Iranian terrorist cell has gotten their hands on weaponized Ergot-B—a compound that causes violent hysteria, madness and death within 24 hours—and plan to unleash the weapon on major cities around the world. Successful deployment would begin a bloodbath as those exposed would kill everyone they encountered before succumbing to the compound’s lethal effects.

Erik Somers—Callsign: Bishop, is called in to investigate, but his first discovery shocks him to the core. Dawoud Abbasi, the terrorist leader planning to unleash Ergot-B, is his biological father.

Bishop, along with an undercover Delta operator known as Callsign: Joker, race across the unforgiving Iranian desert in search of the Ergot-B. Seeking answers, both professional and personal, Bishop must fight against a private army, Iranian Special Forces and men driven mad by Ergot-B. With the life of his biological mother in the balance, and countless more people in cities around the world, Bishop must call on all his strength to not only survive, but also stop the man revealed as his father—even if he has to kill him.

CALLSIGN: KNIGHT

When a team of Delta operators goes missing in Shenhuang, one of China’s newly constructed ghost cities, Shin Dae-jung—Callsign: Knight is called in to assist. But the Osprey transporting him to the scene falls prey to an EMP attack and is forced to crash land atop a parking garage. With a wounded pilot in tow, Knight explores the empty city for signs of life and finds two terrified children who warn him that something monstrous is stalking the city. When the pilot disappears, leaving a pool of blood and spent bullet casings behind, Knight doesn’t doubt their story.

As bullets fly and bodies drop, Knight must protect the children, uncover the fate of the missing Delta team and defend against an unstoppable killer whose ability to regenerate and whose horrible appearance reminds him of something he’s faced before—the mythological Hydra. But he’s not alone in the surreal abandoned city. A team of SAS soldiers, along with Anna Beck, a former member of Manifold Genetics’ private security force, join the fray. Together, they fight against a nightmare that follows its objective to the end: kill them all.

CALLSIGN: DEEP BLUE

Tom Duncan-Callsign: Deep Blue, former Army ranger, former president of the United States and handler of the black ops force known as Chess Team, is visiting the team’s new secret headquarters. The underground facility, known as Alpha, once belonged to Manifold Genetics, a corrupt corporation shut down by Chess Team. But despite being abandoned for years, Alpha still hides secrets.

Security doors slam shut and lock, sealing Duncan and his assistants inside. As Matt Carrack, the leader of Duncan’s security team, attempts to gain access, Duncan discovers they are not alone inside the abandoned facility. High tech intruders have infiltrated the base, their goal unknown. But a far greater threat rises from the subterranean depths beneath Alpha-failed regenerative experiments from the days of Manifold, and they’re fast, hostile and hungry.

While the security team are beset by ingenious death traps, determined mercenaries and vicious creatures that defy their imaginations, Duncan and his personal bodyguard must battle the growing tide of creatures, stave off the incursion of enemy forces and prevent the violent intruders from releasing the horror currently contained inside Alpha, to an unsuspecting outside world. And as the battle rages, a bomb quietly counts down in the shadows.

It’s no secret that THE LAST HUNTER series are my personal favorites out of all my books.
It’s no secret that THE LAST HUNTER series are my personal favorites out of all my books. They feature all the action, monsters, mythology and craziness of my other novels, but they’ve got more heart, and a main character, who is based on my son, Solomon. The story is more personal and moving while still being action packed and, at times, quite gory.

ASCENT is the third installment in the “Antarktos Saga” and I’m told it’s the best of the series thus far. Not only do we get to see what happens to Solomon after he **spoiler alert for those who haven’t read the first two books** steps into Tartarus, but ASCENT is the book that bridges the events in my novel ANTARKTOS RISING with the Antarktos Saga.

As you may know, the Antarktos Saga is based upon my previously published novel ANTARKTOS RISING, first published in 2007. THE LAST HUNTER – DESCENT takes place twenty years before ANTARKTOS RISING, and in ASCENT, the stories merge. The last two books of the Antarktos Saga finish BOTH story lines.

The book is available in e-book format right now and will be out in print in the next 1.5 weeks, just in time for Christmas!

DESCRIPTION:

I no longer exist. My kidnapping, breaking and corruption at the hands of the half-human, half-demon Nephilim began the journey to nothingness. I had hoped to one day rejoin my loved ones in the outside world, but before I realized it, twenty years had passed. Time is a distance I cannot traverse. If there is any memory of me, it is distant. Worse, the spirit of Nephil, Lord of the Nephilim, used my connection with the continent to decimate the surface world. I’ve done horrible things in the past, but I’m now responsible for the deaths of billions. Billions. God…

And so I have removed myself from the physical world, and Nephil’s reach, to live out eternity in Tartarus, a place of endless torture where the burden I carry crushes my soul, driving me to madness. I am weak and cold. My abilities are gone. And I am not alone in this hell. There are things here more horrible than I could have imagined.

But as much as I think I deserve this fate, I’m driven to find a way to escape. To exist again. To return to my new family–Em and Luca. To set things right. I am Solomon Ull Vincent–The Last Hunter–and I will exist again.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of working with the most frustrating, aggravating people on the planet (you’ve been there, too). And when I finally removed myself from the situation, I had a storehouse of negative emotions eating at me. I needed catharsis, but I don’t box, hunt, or even hurl inanimate objects. I gave up cooking ants with a magnifying glass thirty years ago. I’m just not a violent person. Outwardly. As many of you know, my imagination is a different story. I once had a gallery art show featuring some of my comic art. I stepped up next to a woman looking at my work and she said to me, “Man, Jeremy Robinson sure is a violent person.” The point is, my catharsis would come from my imagination. But the product couldn’t just be freakishly violent. It also had to be funny because I needed to find my sense of humor again. The resulting project was THE NINJA’S PATH – INSPIRATIONAL SAYINGS FOR THE SILENT ASSASSIN, a very funny, very violent parody on inspirational books written and illustrated under the pen name, Kutyuso Deep (sound it out).

The book contains seventy illustrations and inspirational sayings along with seven chapters of text that reveal the seven pillars of ninjitsu. This hard cover tome of hilarity makes for the perfect Christmas gift for pretty much any man, teenage or adult, and while women aren’t the target audience, most find the book funny too. If you leave this sucker on the coffee table, your next gathering will have more than a few memorable conversations. I promise.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE HYSTERICAL VIRAL VIDEOS FOR THE BOOK!

Here’s the book’s description:

WITH SEVENTY ILLUSTRATIONS portraying the simple joys of the ninja lifestyle, this concise and elegantly designed book gives ninjas messages of peace and illumination in the virtues, rewards, ideals, and emotions of their chosen profession—silent assassination. The Ninja’s Path is for anyone who understands that the “wellness” messages typically spouted by the world leave the silent assassin a castrated version of his former self, overflowing with useless emotions like compassion and love.

Kutyuso Deep calls on all ninjas—aspiring and professional—to ignore all that! Instead, with this book in hand, they can finally focus on the pure and simple pleasures that come from intimidating those around them, stalking a target from the shadows, or eviscerating an enemy in his sleep.

Ninjas can now turn their attention to the seven pillars of ninjitsu wellness—Social, Occupational, Spiritual, Intellectual, Emotional, Environmental, and Physical—as poetically described and exquisitely illustrated in this book. Each pillar is represented by ten core values for which the author has provided an inspirational saying and illustration to help reveal how each value applies to the ninja.

And here’s a quick excerpt:

How do you feel about killing?

Don’t answer quickly. Ponder the question. Let your mind flash back and experience every evisceration, strangulation, and dismemberment. Taste it afresh. Smell the blood. The bile. Feel the gore between your fingers and toes. Hear the cries for mercy and the ting! of blade on bone.
This is your job.
Your occupation.
You are a ninja.
The silent assassin.
And your profession is a noble one—
perhaps the noblest.

I could have waited for all the Callsign Book 1s to finish out before releasing this one, but the story could not be contained. For real. It has nothing to do with Christmas being on the way. Okay, fine. Maybe a little. But the story IS awesome. Not only is Sean Ellis once again the (superb) co-author, but we’ve brought back King’s close friend, and archaeologist, George Pierce for this story, and the pair, who are deadly and brilliant when together, find themselves once again knee deep in shhhhenanigans. Check out the story description below and then hop on over to Amazon or B&N and pick it up! *Apple and print coming soon.
