I'm often asked what books/authors I would recommend
from readers who have read all of my books and are looking for more good
reads. If you're one of those folks and are looking for a good read, I
have provided my top 40 picks for novels by some of my favorite
authors. Enjoy.
What do you picture when you think about islands? Most people imagine white sand beaches, grass huts (with satellite TV), hammocks, and rendezvous in pristine waterfall-fed lagoons. But not everyone has such a pleasant outlook when it comes to nature’s gift to introverts. Take me for example. My newest book, Island 731, is based on the heinous human experimentation carried out during World War II by the Imperial Japanese Army’s R&D group, Unit 731, and it asks the question, “What would be the result if Unit 731 was never stopped?” Limb replacements. Rapid Freezing. Vivisections. Cannibalism. Fun stuff like that.
As you can see, not every imagined island getaway is a destination worth spending your vacation—or even ten minutes—unless being eaten by a crocodile with tentacles is your idea of fun. So, in celebration of Island 731’s release, I’d like to take a look at the five freakiest fictional islands that continue to inspire (read: give nightmares to) authors like me.
A few years ago I had the pleasure of working with the most frustrating, aggravating people on the planet (you’ve been there, too). And when I finally removed myself from the situation, I had a storehouse of negative emotions eating at me. I needed catharsis, but I don’t box, hunt, or even hurl inanimate objects. I gave up cooking ants with a magnifying glass thirty years ago. I’m just not a violent person. Outwardly. As many of you know, my imagination is a different story. I once had a gallery art show featuring some of my comic art. I stepped up next to a woman looking at my work and she said to me, “Man, Jeremy Robinson sure is a violent person.” The point is, my catharsis would come from my imagination. But the product couldn’t just be freakishly violent. It also had to be funny because I needed to find my sense of humor again. The resulting project was THE NINJA’S PATH – INSPIRATIONAL SAYINGS FOR THE SILENT ASSASSIN, a very funny, very violent parody on inspirational books written and illustrated under the pen name, Kutyuso Deep (sound it out).
As many of you know, I have several books out/coming out under pen names. Some are secret, some are not. This is out of the non-secret books. Before I decided to take up writing, I illustrated comics, t-shirts, etc, for a living. Finding ways to combine the two passions makes me happy. I first achieved this with THE SCREENPLAY WORKBOOK by creating cartoon intros for each chapter. Well, now the cartoons are the chapters. In THE ZOMBIE’S WAY there are forty inspirational words of zombie wisdom for the recently undead accompanied by forty illustrations. Here’s the description:
Perhaps you misunderstood the title of this post. Let me rephrase. iPhone Owners, get Rooked! The long awaited (by me, at least) iPhone game based on my Jack Sigler Thriller series has finally hit the App Store and is available for purchase on the iPod, iPhone and iPad for $.99! The game features Rook and takes place after the novel, PULSE. Rook is sent, by Deep Blue, to various locations featured in PULSE—the Amazon, Tristan Da Cunha, New Hampshire—to mop up the bad guys left behind. This includes, crazy capybaras, Gen-Y Security, psycho regens, a host of new boss monsters, and more. It’s action-packed, funny and smacks of old school Nintendo goodness.
In the past few weeks I have developed a curious case of writer’s block. That’s not to say I’ve been unproductive. I’ve already finished two novels since December 2009, published an e-book and marketed the release of PULSE in mass market and INSTINCT in hard cover. Then there is all those other small projects in the works (BENEATH hard cover special release, comics, iPhone apps, etc). And from the 8th of July to the 11th I was in NYC at Thrillerfest. I came home eager to get back to work. But today, having just finished the last round of edits on THRESHOLD am itching to write something new. I haven’t written since finishing my YA novel a month ago.
