Callsign: King – The first book of the Chesspocalyspe

The Chesspocalypse has begun!Callsign: King

CALLSIGN: KING is the first of five novellas, each one focussing on a different member of the Chess Team. Like the full length novels, these stories are fast-paced and full of myths, monsters and mayhem. Each book is co-authored by one of five different authors, each selected by me for their ability to write gripping fast-paced and scary stories combining ancient history, modern science and brilliant action sequences. If you’re a fan of the Chess Team novels, you’re going to love the novellas.

The Story:

The fabled Elephant Graveyard has been discovered. It contains enough ivory to make Ethiopia a wealthy nation. But the cave contains more than physical riches–it also holds the means to control the world. Fifteen scientists enter the cave. Only one leaves.

Jack Sigler, Callsign: King (field leader of the covert, black ops Chess Team) receives a cryptic text from Sara Fogg, his girlfriend and CDC “disease detective”. A catastrophic disease has been reported in Ethiopia’s Great Rift Valley, but Fogg suspects something more is going on. Her suspicion is confirmed when King’s arrival in Africa is met by a high speed assassination attempt.

As King fights against two competing, high-tech mercenary forces, each struggling for control of the deadly discovery, Fogg disappears. Working with the surviving member of the science team that made the discovery, King begins a search for Fogg and the source of the potential plague that takes him back to the Great Rift Valley, back to the Elephant Graveyard, and brings him face-to-face with modern man’s origins. The fabled Elephant Graveyard has been discovered. It contains enough ivory to make Ethiopia a wealthy nation. But the cave contains more than physical riches–it also holds the means to control the world. Fifteen scientists enter the cave. Only one leaves.

  4. I’m interested in reading this in print, but why does it cost $10 compared to full length novels which are only $8?

  5. Thanks, man!

  6. Hi Michael,

There are a couple reasons for the higher price (despite it being shorter). First, the book is a trade paper back size, which means that it’s a large format and printed on a higher quality paper (mass marker paperbacks are printed on newsprint). Second, the book is printed via Print-On-Demand, which means they’re printed as orders come in rather than doing a print run up front. Big publishers print thousands upon thousands of books, which lowers the cost per book. But since I can’t print thousands, the cost to print each book remains higher. BUT, the book has a beautiful cover, great interior design and is high quality compared to the mass markets. Hope this helps make sense of the price!

  7. This series sounds interesting, but I’m a little confused and we all know confusion often prevents purchasing. Since I’m new to your books, I’m not sure if the full length novels you mention are in the Chesspocalypse series or are you referring to your other books? Trying to figure out the best place to start, and wondering if King is it, or would you recommend another starting place.

  8. Money shouldn’t be an object when it comes to these books. I’d give my Firstborn. Seriously.

  9. Ha. Thanks Blake!

  10. Good question, Brad. PULSE is the first novel in the series, then INSTINCT and then THRESHOLD.

The CALLSIGN/Chesspocalypse books take place after THRESHOLD, but they’re stand alone stories, so you don’t need to read all three novels to understand or enjoy the novellas. That said, the novellas may reference events and relationships form the novels, so there could be some spoilers. But they’re designed to be read with or without the novels. I say, just buy the lot and start at the beginning. :) Well, maybe wait for the price of Threshold to drop. Comes out in mass market paperback on Jan 31, 2012. :)

  11. Okay, I’m all caught up. Any idea on a publish date for Callsign: Queen? Thank you.

    Comment by Gail — August 16, 2011 @ 4:29 am

  12. Nope. Each book has a different co-author who I wait on to deliver the ms. The absolute latest deadline is Sept 30, so the latest any of the books will be out is Oct 30. BUT, I’m fairly certain most will be in my hands by next week and should be out by mid-September. It’s a challenge to not have a solid release date, but if this were big publishing, they wouldn’t be out until next summer! :) — Jeremy

  13. Really enjoyed Callsign: King, can’t wait for the next one, and i am also wondering what the next Chess Team adventure will be and when we can expect it.

    Comment by GREG — August 16, 2011 @ 9:58 am

  14. Man… Jeremy is a slick writer and Sly dog….I check the site every few weeks to see the new updates and Last month I saw King on the home page… And I was like hummm WTH is that a new book? Really? I go directly to Amazon and order it for the ebook. Great read I love the chess team books and I’m PUMPED about getting the rest of CHESSPOCALYSPE on Ebooks.. As Always thanks for putting out the amounts of book you do every year, it’s great for us readers!!!!

  15. Thank you for your response, Mr. Robinson. I’ll be watching for Queen, and the rest of the team. I will check back regularly. :)

  16. Thanks, Chuck!

  17. Hey Greg,

The next full length novel probably won’t be out until next summer. My next two hard covers from Thomas Dunne/St. Martin’s Press won’t be Jack Sigler/Chess Team books. They’re just as good, but the publisher wanted to do some stand alone stories. So I’ll probably be releasing book 4 on my own (like I am with the Chesspocalypse books). So there will be a slight delay in the yearly schedule, BUT, that’s part of the reason for the five Chesspocalypse books, which when combined, are more than a full length novel. AND I’ll now be releasing CALLSIGN: KING – BOOK TWO!! Before next summer as well. So, plenty of Chess action before the next full length book.

  18. What’s the SECONDWORLD about and when is it releasing? I haven’t had the time to keep up with the releases of my favorite authors. Is there a FIRSTWORLD? I saw the cover on twitter, and it seems Nazis are involved. Good cover, piqued my interest.

    Comment by Shane Falco Fan — August 19, 2011 @ 8:49 pm

  19. Heh, there is no FIRSTWORLD. As for what it’s about… Yes there are Nazis, but I’m not going to say more yet. At least not until the final description has been written. You’re just going to have to wait. :) — Jeremy

  20. thanks for the response, Mr. Robinson. I am definitely excited for the next of the novellas and whatever you release next i will be reading, Chess Team or not. Love your style, love your stories, love you characters. Keep em coming, please.

  21. Will do, Greg!

    Comment by Jeremy Robinson — August 24, 2011 @ 9:26 am

  22. Looking forward to the german translation :)
The book is just about King and no other member of the team is in it? And the story plays after Treshold? So the open questions are solved? :)

    Comment by Julian — December 1, 2011 @ 6:16 am

  23. Hi Julian,

I don’t know if there will be a German translation of the Callsign books. And yes, each Callsign book focuses on the character it’s named for. As for the open questions in Threshold, they’ll be fully answered in the fourth full length novel, RAGNAROK. That said, you get a peek at what happened to Rook in Callsign: Rook, which leads directly into RAGNAROK.
